A set of eight oval shaped postal wafers depicting Welsh Costumes, including 'The Wedding', 'Market Scene' and 'The Bidding' Circa 1840-60. Wafer Seals were used to secure mail, close folded documents, or authenticate legal papers, and were cheaper and faster than traditional sealing wax, which required melting with a taper. Recipients of letters had to physically tear or break the wafer seal from the back of an envelope to read the incoming letter. This set of eight wafers have been attached to a card which has a decorative border. The card measures.19cms by 23.5cms.
