.....olim ab Arriano descriptus, nunc vero ab Abrah. Orelio ex eodem delineatus. An antique map by Abraham Ortelius of the Indian Ocean and contiguous regions of the Middle East, India and Southeast Asia, published by Ortelius in his 'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum'. The map stretches from Egypt and the eastern coast of Africa across the Arabian Peninsula, India and to Southeast Asia. The Equator and the Tropic of Cancer are notable. There is also an inset map of the north-central Mediterranean. Circa 1597 with early hand colouring. This map is based on the Periplus Maris Erythraei, the creator of which is unknown. It connects explorers from the time of Ortelius directly to famous travelers from antiquity such as King Hanno of Carthage and Odysseus, known for Homer's Odyssey.
