An uncoloured antique map of England and Wales, from the 'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum', by Abraham Ortelius. Scale approximately 1:1,500,000. The title is within a very elaborate strapwork cartouche, with the royal coat of arms on the central boss. Ireland is decorated with sheep and the sea area is decorated with ships and sea creatures. There is a bar scale in English miles (with 60 repeated). In the first state of this map, which was used up until 1584, the scale in the top roght cornrt incorrectly reads "30-40-60-60-70-80". This was corrected in the map's second state. The map has Latin text on the verso with the number 6 beneath, with the letter .B. slightly obscured.
Approx 47cms by 38cms.
