This ancient British Isles map has been finely drawn and engraved by Mercator himself and is a beautiful example of this early edition. It is from the 1584 edition of his Tabulae Geographicae, the first atlas published by Mercator. The title "Europae I Tab" appears above the top border. On the reverse, in Latin text, there is an explanation of the modifications introduced in changing the projection from Ptolemy's to that used by Mercator.
