"Alexander at the Battle of the Granicus. An antique line engraving by A. Bormans, (18th century German engraver) after the prominent artist Charles Le Brun (1619-1690), a celebrated French painter of the 17th century. The battle took place on the road from Abydus to Dascylium, at the crossing of the Granicus in the Troad region. The print depicts the historic moment during the Battle of the Granicus in 334 BCE when Alexander the Great, fighting in the thick of the cavalry melee, is nearly killed by a Persian commander, but is saved at the last second by his companion. Circa 1750. Has narrow margins and some paper loss in top right quarter either side of the leaning tree.
