Bartlett was a British landscape artist famous for his views of all parts of the world which appeared in a series of travel volumes issued in the nineteenth century. Original hand outline colour along the course of Bartlett's travels.

Like most of Colton's state maps, this map is largely derived from an earlier wall map of North America produced by Colton and D. Griffing Johnson. Colton identifies various cities, towns, forts, rivers, rapids, fords, and an assortment of additional topographical details. Map is hand colored in pink, green, yellow and blue pastels to define county and state boundaries. Surrounded by Colton's typical spiral motif border. Dated and copyrighted to J. H. Colton, 1855. Morse and Samuel Breese in the Clerks Office of the Southern District of New York." This map is from the Cerographic Atlas of the United States, supplement to the New York Observer. It has been colored by the cerographic printing process (a type of lithography) which left a grid of very fine green lines and a thick green line for the county boundaries. There are inset maps of Philadelphia and the coal regions'. Longitude from Washington at bottom, from Greenwich at top.

The colour code indicates Federal Non-Slaveholding States (pink), States bordering Slaveholding States (blue), and the Confederate Slaveholding States (yellow). Also indicates the Indian Territory with its own colour (green). The large Washington Territory extends east to the Continental Divide and south to the Utah Territory. The proposed Territory of Arizona is shown in the southern part of New Mexico Territory. A huge Dakota Territory extends from Minnesota to Washington. The map is surrounded by a decorative vine and leaf border. An uncommon pre-Civil War issue that was published by the London Printing and Publishing Company. Circa 1861. Original colouring. Several old vertical and horizontal folds with some foxing. Approx 42cms by 26.5cms.
